Hello Fellow Zontians and Friends,

I am so excited that we are about to kick off the drawings for our first calendar fundraiser. I knew we could surpass our goal. What a huge success, $7,450 raised! I am so proud of all our hard work. Special thank you to Trish and Mary for going above and beyond to organize this event and everyone that donated prizes. Also congratulations to Trish, Kris, and Chris for being the top 3 raffle ticket sellers!! I can’t wait to see who wins the Mother’s Day Basket.

Our May business meeting will be the second Monday of the month like usual since there’s no auction. So, I will see you all on Zoom 5/10 at 6pm. May is Women’s Health month so we are going to have a great speaker to talk to us about female specific concerns with Covid-19. Our speaker is Kerry Chenausky, NP. Kerry is also a sexual assault nurse examiner and will tell us a little about her role with that.

Hello Zontians & Friends,

I want to start off by thanking our own Andrea Bordenca for leading us on such a great discussion at our last meeting. I think we all learned some great tools for addressing our unconscious biases and how to work with others who may not see eye to eye with us. We all need to continue to strive to achieve all forms of equality.
Also thank you to all those who have donated supplies to our annual Period Project. The supplies will be divided up and distributed to local organizations in need.

Honoring the Life and Legacy of RBG

International Women’s Day Tribute: Honoring the Life and Legacy of RBG

Marked annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality. The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is ‘Choose To Challenge’. A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So, let’s all #ChooseToChallenge.

On March 8th  from 6 – 7pm on Zoom, the Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley will celebrate women’s achievement by learning more about Ruth Bader Ginsburg—a woman who raised awareness against bias and took action for equality.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Reading List (https://libguides.wlu.edu/law/RBG) highlights texts written by and about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court. Additionally, it provides users with information and video on the nomination and confirmation of Justice Ginsburg, some of her most notable opinions and dissents authored as a justice, and several of the cases she argued before the Supreme Court as an attorney.

If you would like to learn more about the legendary RBG and how she might approach some of the events unfolding before us, request an invitation for Zonta’s March 8th zoom meeting and submit your discussion questions to info@ZontaQV.org.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a true trailblazer in the male dominated legal field, Ginsburg was one of only nine women in her Harvard Law School class and the first woman to earn a position on the prestigious Harvard Law Review. When her husband graduated from Harvard, Ginsburg transferred to Columbia Law School where she graduated at the top of her class. Despite these achievements, law firms were still unwilling to hire a woman and Ginsburg received no employment offers from any of the firms she interviewed with after graduation. Still, she persevered, becoming one of America’s first female law professors and later the first woman tenured at Columbia Law School.
Ginsburg devoted her legal career to challenging laws that barred women from jobs or denied them their rights, working to extend equal protection under the law to include gender and strategically using male plaintiffs to challenge laws that discriminated on the basis of sex. She co-founded The ACLU Women’s Rights Project; and, as general counsel for the ACLU, Ginsburg argued six landmark gender discrimination cases before the Supreme Court, successfully winning five. She was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993, only the second woman to sit on the court, where she served until her death. In her almost three decades on the Supreme Court, Ginsburg was an unwavering champion for gender equality and equal rights.
“Justice Ginsburg worked tirelessly to ensure women’s equal rights under the law,” said Zonta International President Sharon Langenbeck. “As advocates for gender equality and human rights, our members in the United States and around the world share Justice Ginsburg’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls. We will continue to fight for equal rights for all as we remember Justice Ginsburg and celebrate her legacy.”
It was founded November 8, 1919, in Buffalo, New York, by a group of forward-thinking women who envisioned a women’s service organization that would advocate for laws and policies that ensure gender equality and help every woman and girl realize her full potential. Through continuous engagement for 10 decades, Zonta International has become a respected and reliable agent of civil society. As a non-governmental organization with general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the organization promotes and strives to protect the human rights of all women and girls and reduce the incidences of violence against them. Dear Zontians and friends,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Let’s all put our positive intentions into 2021. I’m wishing for everyone to have a healthy, peaceful, and happy new year.
My friend Jennifer Hamilton gave us a great discussion of Feminism at December’s meeting. I’m so glad we were able to have an open and honest talk. I’m hoping she will come back again sometime soon.
We have a great line up of meetings over the next few months.
Greetings  Zontians and Friends,
I want to start my first president’s message by saying thank you to Trish for guiding our club so well for the past two years. You were a great president and I’m honored to follow in your footsteps.
I hope everyone has been staying healthy and soaking up the sunshine this summer. I know that for many this has probably not been the summer you planned on but I hope you enjoyed it anyways. This pandemic has certainly highlighted how important it is to find joy in the little things.
Dear Sister Zontians and friends,
A resounding THANK YOU to our  Springfield, Northampton and Quaboag clubs who joined together at the February meeting to assemble over 500 feminine hygiene packets for local women in need. What an amazing collaboration between our clubs, local individuals and businesses who supported this project with product and monetary donations. Please see the listing of area businesses on zontaqv.org/period, who were drop off locations and make a point to say Thank you to these generous supporters. We received excellent “press” about this project and we are truly getting the word out about Zonta!
Dear Sister Zontians and friends,
What an inspiring January meeting! Many thanks to
Dana and Mary for their efforts in bringing us our first (annual, I hope) Girls Rocket award program! A special thanks to Debbie who connected us with our amazing speaker, Grace Gerhardt. I am still in awe of all of these incredible young women!
At our February 10th meeting, we will join together with area clubs and local agencies to participate in our 2020 Period Project. We are raising awareness in our communities that, sadly, feminine products are not covered under SNAP or WIC benefits and so, we are asking area businesses, friends and family to collect and contribute pads, tampons, pantyliners, soaps, wipes and underwear to this important project. Please continue to share this event on your Facebook pages.  As you collect these items, please email Mary with the count of items, so that she can keep a running tally. THANK YOU, MARY!
We also look forward to inducting two new Zonta sisters into our family; Suz Tiranno and Stacey Troy. This is going to be a great evening!
